Providence Place vs Harbor Mall DIARY ENTRY
When looking at these two malls it is quite evident the differences between them. Providence place is a huge facility housing many mundane stores, but also very expensive and upscale stores. you can find places like tiffany, clarks, and nordstroms at providence place. these types of stores are very unlikely to be found at other local malls and would never be found at the new harbor mall in fall river. here you have a k-mart and then no name stores with brands that noone has ever heard of. providence place is in the center of the capitol city in rhode island. the harbor mall is in the south end (lower income) section of the city. with that said, based on who lives in a area you have access to certain stores and even places where one can hang out or spend their past time. providence place has uno's, american joe's, and p.f. changs while the harbor mall has papa pizza. i mean its quite evident what people and who have access to certain places and things.

Creating Middle Class jobs and What does it mean to be Middle class
what a texas city did to create higher paying jobs for the less educated, but is it really middle class jobs?http://finance.yahoo.com/news/recipe-for-middle-class-jobs.html
what does it mean to be middle class. this question was asked to a bunch of facebook users and the responses are pretty interesting. are they accurate? its quite evident in some responses they dont quite know the differences in class or what even makes up class.

modern times
this is a piece from Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times. I think its a great example of how a working class person is looked at as far as skill, but it also shows the struggles of the actual worker. It is also pretty funny... ENJOY FOLKS

Working as hard as the day is long
I like the Mike Rose book a lot. It was coming from a point of view that many of the academics tend to over look. I bet if I gave my mom or dad that book they could pin point some of the main ideas the piece was presenting. With that, this class has actually made me feel pretty bad. I feel like I am stuck in a class that isnt bad, but not necessarly what I am looking for out of life. Thanks media and thank you all mighty American dream. I don't know what more I can do as a person to become something more than what I am bound to be. I feel no matter what amount of education level I have I need to work and work hard and physical sometimes to get satisfaction from what I am doing. Is everyone like this? I feel like I lose myself in work and academics and when this is all said and done I have no idea where I will be. I think of myself as cultured and well traveled, I know people in high places, but I still have working class values. Mike Rose shows how many of these working class people are happy and content, but we've also read many stories of people lost and stuck in this limbo of class belonging. Just adds a whole different element to the individual. "working as hard as the day is long, a working man works when he gets home" dmb

ROGER AND ME FOLLOW UP
1.AMWAY WOMEN- LIKES FLINT AND BELIEVES SHE JUST HAS TO DO WHAT IT TAKES TO MAKE MONEY AFTER THE LAYOFFS. I THINK MOORE INCLUDES THIS WOMEN TO SHOW US, THE AUDIENCE, THAT NOT ALL OF THE FLINT COMMUNITY ACTUALLY SEES WHAT IS GOING ON BASED ON THE LAYOFFS AND HOW THE SYSTEM OF BUSINESS IS ACTUALLY WORKING. I THINK THIS WOMEN IS BLINDED BY DAILY LIFE.
2.MOM (FAMILY KICKED OUT CHRISTMAS EVE)- YOU DONT REALLY GET HER OPINION OF FLINT, BUT YOU GET HER FEELING OF HOW SHE IS AFFECTED BY THE SYSTEM AND THE STEPS OF THE LAYOFFS. SHE PROBABLY DOESNT HAVE A SPECIFIC OPINION OF FLINT, BUT OF HER SITUATION. THIS IS THE SCENE THAT STRUCK ME MOST. I THINK THIS WAS INCLUDED BECAUSE MOORE WANTED US TO RELISE HOW SEVERE AND HOW APATHETIC THE BUSINESS WORLD IS. ROGER SMITH WAS TOLD ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR INCIDENT AND DID NOTHING. THE RAGE OF THE MOTHER I BELIEVED SHOWED US HOW MANY FELT, BUT WERE NOT QUITE PUSHED TO THAT POINT.
3.GOLF LADIES- LIKE FLINT THEY DONT REALLY HAVE A REASON NOT TO. THEY WERE INCLUDED TO SHOW HOW THE OTHER SIDE VIEWS WHAT HAD HAPPENED IN FLINT. THEY ARE NOT DIRECTLY IMPACTED BY THE LAYOFFS, THUS THEY HAVE NO DIRECT OR FEELING OF SYMPATHY FOR THE PEOPLE AND COMMUNITY.
4.TACO BELL MANAGER- HE THINKS THE PEOPLE IN FLINT ARE NOT CAPABLE WORKERS, BUT AGAIN YOU DONT GET A SENSE OF HIS SPECIFIC OPINION ON THE CITY. HE BELIEVES OPPORTUNITY IS THERE, BUT THE PEOPLE ARE JUST NOT SKILLED ENOUGH TO JUMP ON IT. MOORE AGAIN SHOWS SOMEONE WITH THIS POINT OF VIW BECAUSE THEY ARE BLINDED BY WHAT IS ACTUALLY GOING ON. THIS MAN HAS A JB AND IS WORRIED ABOUT JUST THAT AND NOTHING MORE.
5.BUNNY KILLER- SHE THINKS FLINT ISNT A PLACE OF PROGRESS. I THINK SHE IS IN SURVIVOR MODE AND DOESNT HAVE THE SKILLS TO DO ANYTHING MORE SO SHE RELIES ON WHAT SHE KNOWS AND WORKS WITH WHAT SHE HAS. MOORE SHOWS US THAT PEOPLE WILL DO ANYTHING TO SURVIVE AND THIS WILL HAPPEN BY ANY MEANS. THIS WOMEN SHOWS US HOW DESPERATE MEASURES CALL FOR DESPERATE ACTIONS. SHE IS LIMITED TO SHOW MUCH BECAUSE SHE RELIED ON GMC THROUGHOUT HER LIFE.
ALL THE CHARACTERS SHOW US A DIFFERENT VIEW POINT FROM SURVIVAL MODE TO NOT AFFECTED AT ALL. WITH THAT SAID, I THINK THEY ARE ALL CONNECTED BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL BLINDED BY THE STRUCTURE OF WHATS GOING ON AND THE ACTUAL AFFECTS IT HAS HAD ON INDIVIDUAL PEOPLE AND THE COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE

because i am an idiot and dont know how to reply to Kevin ;p
Yeah... I got that now after looking more into it and I greatly appreciate your input. I mean, I was listening to this kind of on and off and pretty much what I gathered from it was they were just eating junk food and local resturants were donating food...soooo...that was how all the weight was being gained...I didnt hear any mention of what you stated above... I just could of totally missed it, but I doubt it...something that is very problematic.

Price Rite Fall River VS. Price Rite Swansea ...It's on!
THIS IS A DIARY ENTRY!!!!!
So I currently live in Fall River, MA and I am in the process of moving and my boyfriend and I love to save money. Who doesn’t right? With that, I went to Price Rite this past week in Fall River. I packed up my reusable Whole Foods bags and marched into the unorganized and filth of the center of the city Price Rite. The fruit wasn’t stocked and the isles were a disaster. With that said, I think I waited in line for over ten minutes and I am not complaining, but I thought to myself if this was Shaws or Stop & Shop would this have happened? In addition, I was surrounded by shoppers in pajama pants and kids running around the isles. To be honest this doesn’t bother me much, I sanitize the shopping cart, do my shopping, and exit as soon as I can, but this time I observed more than usual. I watched the shoppers, the condition of the store, the products provided, and finally how the employees interacted with the customers. Let’s just note that overall, it was not a great shopping experience and to anyone moving to Fall River I would not recommend them grocery shopping there :). With that, on my way home from Providence, last week my boyfriend had called and asked if I could pick up a few things, so I stopped at the Price Rite in Swansea because it was on the way home. When I walked in the store, it was bright and clean. The employees were friendly and the store was actually very organized. I was quite surprised and slightly impressed. Swansea is a small money town and I right away I made that connection to the condition of the store. The vegetables and fruits provided at the Swansea location were fresh and also had more variety than the Fall River store. I felt comfortable shopping and could actually hear the music playing in the background. Don’t get me wrong Price Right Swansea is no Stop & Shop, but it felt like a Whole Foods compared to the Price Right not even 15 miles away in Fall River. I think it’s evident the point I am trying to bring forth here regarding class and to be honest it’s simply quite disgusting…

protest and gain weight
Interesting information regarding the protests going on... people who have been there for even just two days have gained weight. I am not actually sure how this came to be and if any statistics have been noted on this yet, but I have heard about this on various news/talk stations this morning. I just thought it kind of odd... Anyway, I am loving that this is such a popular topic on facebook, but on local news (when covering national stuff) the protests are not really mentioned. I also think that’s odd (heh) and maybe convenient…good link I read the other day, but at this point learning about this from whatever angel or viewpoint is all interesting. I hope the link works!

I need the longest bootstraps you can find!
I really liked and enjoyed this weeks readings. I always related what we learned up until this point to the political structures put in place. I always really enjoy learning about the truths of social america and how we are intentionally not told the many truths about our American history. I believe its an essential point for all to know more than just the basic knowledge about of not so good past, but the structural limitations that are put into place allowing that to NOT happen. with that, there is a lot of good reading material supporting this. With that in mind, specifically I think of Race without Racism written by Eduardo Bonilla-silva and his whole idea of colorblindness. In addition, you being to put this complex puzzle together adding in new elements and in this case class comes into place. Slowly, I am beginning to see how these same structures that keep up from learning the correct and true history are also limiting the mobility of certain groups of people to move up. We are blinded by false hopes and dreams and the idea of individualism that is supposed to be a motivator, but is a sense also hold us down. The pieces were great in giving specific details (GI Bill, Affirmative Action) on how all people and groups have received government assistance, but yet we have a certain mindset of we did it on our own that overshadows the truths...

I'm hip...I have a blog now
My name is Sharon...
This is my first blog...imagine that...anyways, I am a senior this year @ RIC and my major is Anthropology. This is my fifth year in college, but to be honest I love just learning and really don't want to join the "real world" yet. With that, I work two jobs, one in Newport, RI as a receptionist at a hair salon and spa and also work at my uncles construction company in Lakeville, MA. I know random, but it works for me and I love the different dynamics both jobs bring into my life. Also, being Portuguese I also have a few clients who houses I clean on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. I AM BUSY! I am in this class because I think it goes hand and hand with a lot you learn in Anthropology, but also because its something of great interest and an important topic I think all Americans should be aware of...Class we all think we know what it is, but do we really? Well I think thats it for my first blog...how did i do? Hopefully I will get better ;)
