I need the longest bootstraps you can find!
I really liked and enjoyed this weeks readings. I always related what we learned up until this point to the political structures put in place. I always really enjoy learning about the truths of social america and how we are intentionally not told the many truths about our American history. I believe its an essential point for all to know more than just the basic knowledge about of not so good past, but the structural limitations that are put into place allowing that to NOT happen. with that, there is a lot of good reading material supporting this. With that in mind, specifically I think of Race without Racism written by Eduardo Bonilla-silva and his whole idea of colorblindness. In addition, you being to put this complex puzzle together adding in new elements and in this case class comes into place. Slowly, I am beginning to see how these same structures that keep up from learning the correct and true history are also limiting the mobility of certain groups of people to move up. We are blinded by false hopes and dreams and the idea of individualism that is supposed to be a motivator, but is a sense also hold us down. The pieces were great in giving specific details (GI Bill, Affirmative Action) on how all people and groups have received government assistance, but yet we have a certain mindset of we did it on our own that overshadows the truths...

I'm hip...I have a blog now
My name is Sharon...
This is my first blog...imagine that...anyways, I am a senior this year @ RIC and my major is Anthropology. This is my fifth year in college, but to be honest I love just learning and really don't want to join the "real world" yet. With that, I work two jobs, one in Newport, RI as a receptionist at a hair salon and spa and also work at my uncles construction company in Lakeville, MA. I know random, but it works for me and I love the different dynamics both jobs bring into my life. Also, being Portuguese I also have a few clients who houses I clean on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. I AM BUSY! I am in this class because I think it goes hand and hand with a lot you learn in Anthropology, but also because its something of great interest and an important topic I think all Americans should be aware of...Class we all think we know what it is, but do we really? Well I think thats it for my first blog...how did i do? Hopefully I will get better ;)
